The Hyades Seen in New Image from The Cosmic Companion!

An open cluster of stars, mostly orange and blue, loosely huddled in space.

Hello everyone!

The nearest open star cluster to Earth, The Hyades is seen from our home world over 150 light years away, in the head of Taurus the Bull.

This cluster of stars stretches 10 light years from side-to-side. Seen from Earth, this is collection covers a large patch of sky which cannot usually be seen in its entirety with a telescope or binoculars.

This stunning cluster is a regular for amateur astronomers, and this original composite image from The Cosmic Companion was created from 16 red, green, blue, and luminance images recorded over 80 minutes on the night of 29 November 2022, using the 10-cm SPA-3 telescope in Spain, available from Telescope Live.

In mythology, The Hyades are a family of nymph sisters associated with rain.

The light seen in this image left its source at a time before the invention of the telephone, soon after Karl Marx published Das Kapital and the first modern notions of electromagnetic radiation were advanced by James Maxwell.

Clear skies!

James
